Seaweed Education

Under construction - excuse the mess while we grow

Seaweed education is a fairly new concept in the west. Seaweed cultivation, collection and cooking has no modern history in the US. As a result, sea produce is misunderstood and under utilitzed. Seaweed is a functional plant that has unlimited potential for health, beauty, food, fertilizer and medicinal purposes.

Over time our library will build and grow. Ama SeaBeauty utilizes seaweeds collected, harvested and grown on PharmerSea. Below you will find a collection of the seaweeds common to the California coast. Many of the seaweed below are used in the processing and formulation of Ama SeaBeauty products.

Macrocystis Pyrifera

Is a giant brown kelp that is prolific in the Pacific Ocean. The kelp can be found washed up onshore of most beaches in CA. This kelp is the major component of all kelp forests. Macrocystis has the fastest linear growth rate of any organism on the planet. This kelp is in the family of Laminariales, or brown seaweed. Brown seaweeds are a source for fucoxanthin, a unique phtochemical. Science has verified this photochemial aids in weight loss and tumor suppression. Macrocystis is grown in Asia for algin production and food. Alginate, derived from algin is used as a binder, emulsifier and stabilizer for food and personal care products.
